The Rose and Bay Awards are for excellence in crowdfunded creativity. If you haven't heard of them, [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has a nice informative post here: Rose and Bay Awards

Anyone can make nominations, but you cannot nominate yourself. If you want, you can nominate Dandelyon's Readings in the Other category in this post here.  You have to make nominations in January.

I will be making some nominations in the next two or three days. If you are doing a project that qualifies, please let me know about it and I'll check it out. I do already have some projects in mind, but I'm happy to at least take a look!

I've found some cool things in years past, looking at other people's nominations.

Edit:  I meant to list the categories!  They are Art, Fiction, Poetry, Web Comic, Other Project, and Patron.

wyld_dandelyon: (Creative Joyous Cat)
Every January, the Rose and Bay awards are open for nominations. The Rose and Bay awards are for excellence in crowdfunding, and the categories are fiction, poetry, art, webcomics, other projects, and patron.

I know I've missed this chance to express appreciation for some of my favorite content providers in the past. Things were busy, I got sick, you know life happens, and sometimes it gets away from you. But today I'm adulting--paying bills (I've got the mortgage check written, but others still to write) and paying a bit of recognition forward for the people whose crowdfunded work I appreciated in 2015. I'm going to check what I bookmarked and see what I shared on Facebook and sit here in the quiet and think about whose work made me smile or think and who inspired me to set aside the computer games and write.

If you can read this, you can nominate too!

I know that often people don't have money to send to their favorite creators. We talk about signal boosts as a way to let creators know you appreciate their work--well, your nomination is kind of a super signal-boost. It tells people who've never heard of you that you think this creator is worthy of their attention.

When you're busking in cyberland, you don't know if anyone is listening. I can tell you, as a creator, I very much value every tip and comment I receive--it lets me know somebody is out there. And I've been very proud of the times I've been nominated for the Rose and Bay award. If you make a nomination, I know the people you nominate will feel the same way.

So, who do you think deserves more recognition than they're getting?

EMG-Zine is eligible for 'Other', 'Poetry', 'Fiction' and 'Art' (though most strongly in the first category)

Torn World is eligible for 'Other', 'Fiction' and 'Art' (not poetry!)  (website is www.tornworld.net)

[livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion's Sketchfest and [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith's poetry fishbowls are aready nominated, as are silvertales_art's Sketch-A-Day, [livejournal.com profile] djinni's Icon Days and [livejournal.com profile] addergoole's Girafe Calls.

There's other wonderful projects out there!  Give the nominees some competition and your favorite artists and writers some free word-of-mouth advertising.  Take a moment to nominate someone.

What really cool stuff have you found that I haven't?

The Rose and Bay Awards were created to honor excellence in crowd-funded projects. The following post includes more information about the awards and links to the pages where you can nominate your favorites: http://ysabetwordsmith.livejournal.com/2139030.html

I am very pleased to see that Ellen Million's <LJ user="ellenmillion">'s Sketchfest has been nominated in the Art category, and [personal profile] filkertom  <LJ user="FilkerTom"> has been nominated for his music.  There are other projects I'm very fond of that have been nominated, including [personal profile] wrenstarling 's Bird Oracle readings.

The primary crowdfunding projects I participated in during 2011 were Dandelyon's Card Draws and Torn World,  If you have enjoyed either or both projects, please consider nominating them.  If there are projects I'm not aware of, I hope you'll nominate them too!

But you have to act fast--nominations are only open until tomorrow evening--they closed before midnight Central Standard Time last year; I think the administrator for that category was on Eastern Time. I have no idea where the administrators for the different categories live this year.

in the runoff poll for the Rose and Bay fiction award, you need to do it right away--the poll closes sometime today! Probably well before Midnight CST, since the original poll closed earlier than I expected; I'm not sure what time zone [livejournal.com profile] esseme  is in!

The final poll for the 2011 Rose and Bay Fiction Award is here!

I'm very proud that both Fireborn and the Feather-Blessed Dragons made it into the final poll!

Thank you to everyone who voted!

I want to thank the people who have voted for my projects.  You honor me.

The fiction category had enough nominations to require a runoff; the initial round will end in less than a week, on February 28, and a second round of voting will start March 1 and run through March 16. Both of my nominated fiction projects (Feather-Blessed Dragons and Fireborn) were, as of yesterday, likely (but not certain) to just barely make it into the runoff, with the Dragons running just ahead of Fireborn.

If you haven't voted yet, I'd be pleased if you'd head over and vote.  Here is the "Fiction" category poll.

I will be very pleased if the Dragons make it into the final round; if it does, I'll have to put Torn World stuff aside for a little bit and get another Dragons story to you in celebration.

Torn World is also up for an award, in the "Other" category, since a whole world depicted in art, poetry, fiction, and wikipedia-style articles online doesn't fit into any of the more easily-defined categories.  I took a peek at those numbers as well, and I suspect that Torn World has a handicap since there's a noticeable overlap in the members of the [livejournal.com profile] crowdfunding  community (which sponsors the award) and the multiple creators involved in the Torn World project.  Unlike real-world elections, you aren't allowed to vote for yourself in the Rose and Bay polls.  But it must also be said that Torn World has some impressive competition in this category.  I love [livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar 's Three Michas, and Duotrope's Guide to fiction and poetry markets is invaluable to me as a writer.  And [livejournal.com profile] s00j 's music is inspiring and delightful.

Here is the "Other" category poll, where you can vote for Torn World or any of a half-dozen other things that enrich my life.

Also, here are links to the categories I was not nominated in.  There's lots of cool stuff there, for instance, Sketchfest and [livejournal.com profile] djinni 's icon days are both up for art awards; [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith's Poetry Fishbowl is up for a poetry award, and there's 11 cool webcomics nominated.

Finally, The Rose and Bay 2011 landing page is here.  Just in case you're not familiar with the award.

The Rose and Bay awards are open for nomination. You can nominate your favorite creative crowdfunded projects for this award. Here is a post linking to each nomination page (fiction, art, poetry, webcomics, other creative projects, and donors are this year's categories).

Anyone is eligible to make nominations, though a creator cannot nominate their own work.  Each of you is welcome to nominate any crowdfunded project you've been enjoying.

A sample nomination, with Torn World information, is as follows:

Project Title: Torn World
Creator Name: Ellen Million, Elizabeth Barrette, Deirdre Murphy, Valerie Higgins, and others
Link: http://www.tornworld.net
Category: Other Project (an original unique shared world with fiction, poetry, mythology, art, and encyclopedia-style articles about the world)
Summary: Torn World is a shared science-fantasy world where the co-creators write, draw, paint, and othewise create a complex world by telling the stories of the people of that world.
Crowdfunding Method: Torn World is crowdfunded through subscriptions to the site, sponsorships to specific stories, and donations to the creators during monthly Muse Fusion events, where the Torn World creators create cool new stuff in response to the prompts and questions posed by the audience.

Torn World is eligible in the "other" category, since Torn World includes poetry, fiction, mythology, art, and worldbuilding articles.  If you wish to nominate Torn World, the other category nomination page is here

I also crowdfunded other projects:
  • Fireborn, which I had hoped to finish in 2010; I still owe you the end of this story, and will get bak to it.. The landing page for Fireborn is here.
  • Feather-Blessed, my series of short stories about girls turned into dragons by a magical feather.  You start the series here.
If someone wants to nominate any of these projects and needs more information to fill in the blanks, just let me know.

As I mentioned recently, I was nominated for a Rose and Bay award for the poetry I've been publishing in this journal, which makes me feel very honored, especially since I very much enjoy the poetry of the woman who nominated me.

As a result, I promised to do an index posting, so people could find my poetry. Here is the list, which includes both poems and lyrics published here in 2009 (which are eligible for the award) and poems and lyrics published here previously.

You're welcome to go peek, now or at your leisure.

And thank you to everyone who supported me, my writing, and my other creative efforts in 2009, whether through donations or comments.  You all enriched my life, and my writing.

The Rose and Bay awards are for honoring excellence in crowdfunded projects.  There are more details here:  http://community.livejournal.com/crowdfunding/154110.html

I'm delighted that I've been nominated for my fiction (both Fireborn and my Flash Fiction), my Busking in Cyberland series of essays, and even my poetry!

Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] red_trillium , [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith , and [livejournal.com profile] zeemverse  for the nominations!

But now I'm writing to ask you to give me some competition

There's a number of nominations in the fiction category right now, and also in "other".  But very few in poetry and art.  If there's other crowdfunded projects you have enjoyed, please go nominate them.

Or at least tell me about them.  Each person can nominate up to three projects/people per category, and some of my first choices have already been nominated by others.

Thanks,

Deirdre

P.S.  You can, of course, also just browse the nominations for the links, and check out people's work.  There's a lot of good stuff out there!
