I got a lot of cleaning done Saturday, but clearly inhaled way too much dust. I woke up Sunday with an allergy hangover complete with blinding headache and massive brain-deadedness. I am still much tireder than I think I ought to be. The worst part of it is that it blindsided me--I was feeling pretty good, considering, all day Saturday. I have noticed that the new diet has made a difference in the allergies; mostly this has been a good thing, but apparently that has shifted things so I can't predict when I've had too much allergen exposure as accurately as I used to.

*sigh*

I've managed to get a lot done at the day job, but have been totally out of spoons by the time I get home. The little old lady who wants her story told is glaring at me from the back of my head (but at least she's sticking around).

Where are the brownies when you need them?

Spoons

It's a metaphor used by many on LJ with chronic and/or invisible illness. I've seen it used two ways, usually both applying to the same person at the same time. First, spoons are a unit of energy. People have only so many spoons before (physically, mentally, or emotionally) they're done in. People living with illness have fewer spoons than healthy people. Second, if you're sick, something that normally takes only one spoon, for instance, getting from bed to work, may take several or many, as each step in the process takes more effort when you're not well.

A related term is "spoonie", which is someone who regularly or always has to be careful lest they run out of spoons.

Oh, my...is it bad to say I love it?

Most people with chronic illness themselves or loved ones with chronic illness love the metaphor.

I believe this essay is the origin of the term.

Thank you so much for this. It made me cry, to be honest. I never really thought of it in this way before. My son suffers from chronic pain due to an injury sustained at the age of 15. He's 22 now, a big, muscular body-builder. Heathly. Beautiful. Brilliant. But the pain is neverending, and no one understands. HE doesn't understand that he has only so many spoons for the day, and will often come to a point where he can't deal with the over-spending of his spoons. That has, unfortunately, led to drug abuse (that he is successfully battling.) Anything to have a few hours without pain. Anything.

He doesn't want to be different. He wants to go to school and not have to worry if his classes are a campus apart. He doesn't want to have to count his steps just to get through crossing the courtyard. He wants to run without fearing a misstep that could lay him up for weeks. In other words, he doesn't want to have to "count spoons." But you know, I'm going to do this with him today, give him a tactile understanding of what he does to himself when he tries to be too "normal." He won't read the article, but he might just get the example.

You have given me such a gift today. Look at that good karma you put out! Thank you. Most sincerely.

It frequently makes me sniffle, too.

I hope he finds the idea useful. Chronic pain is miserable even without the compounding social pressure on someone who appears to be young and healthy.

I hope it helps. People don't realize how many spoons dealing with pain takes, just as they don't realize how draining allergies are.

Now I'm really glad I mentioned being out of spoons--and that the great [livejournal.com profile] kelkyaq was around to provide the link!
